Expressive Self-Portrait

 There are three parts to this project grade:

1. Self-Portrait Plan Sheet

2. Self-Portrait Artwork

3. Artist Statement


Self-Portrait Plan

1.      Make two thumbnail sketches.

What will you include in your portrait? Where will it be on your paper?

 

How will you show your personality and identity?

Consider: facial expression, pose, clothing, background, other symbols...

Then complete your plan:

2.      What medium/materials do you think you will you use?

 

 

3.      What are the specific steps you’ll take to make and complete your artwork?

 

Self-Portrait

Your self-portrait must:

- Represent something about your personality or identity

- Show good craftsmanship and use of time

- Fill your page (how can you use your background space to express yourself? What place or objects could you add?)


Artist Statement

Your artist statement is an explanation of what you made and why. You might…

Describe your artwork – what does it look like? What mediums did you use?

List your inspirations – was there a specific artist from our artist study that inspired you? Or an image from your digital “about me” collage?

Explain how your artwork represents you – how did you show your personality or identity?

Talk about your process - Did you have any trouble while you were creating this piece? If so, what did you do to overcome that challenge? What did you learn?

Talk about the result – Did it turn out the way you planned? If not – what changed while you were working?

 


Write at least 6 sentences explaining your artwork, using the questions above as a guide.

  • Draw a picture that represents you. You could focus on your looks by drawing a realistic picture, your personality by drawing a more creative or abstract self-portrait, or your identity by including objects and symbols that represent you

Variety Drawing

 Variety is a Principle of Design. Variety means using multiple Elements within the same drawing - multiple colors, multiple textures, multiple types of lines, etc. Start off by completing the practice worksheet to explore a variety of ways to draw a single object. Choose something simple you can draw many times, like an apple or a basketball. Next, start on your main drawing. This will only have 12 boxes, so that means you can leave out 3 techniques from the practice worksheet that you didn't like as much. Step 1: Divide your paper into 12 boxes using a ruler. If you are using 9” x 12” paper, that would be a line every 3 inches. Step 2: In pencil, sketch out an object of your choice and a background that goes all the way to the edge of your paper on all four sides, like this: Step 3: Add variety! Color Schemes

A color scheme is the combination of colors used within a single artwork. Learning specific color schemes helps you decide what color combination will work best for your artwork. Color schemes are based on where the colors are located on the color wheel. For example, a complementary color scheme is a color scheme that uses any two opposite colors - like red and green. You can use the color wheel to find other opposite pairs! Can you find a couple more complementary color pairs? There are a lot of different color schemes, but we'll look at six of them: MONOCHROMATIC "mono" = one, "chroma" = color, so "monochrome" = one color A monochrome picture uses different values  of one single color. Example: light blue, medium blue, and dark blue.
