Art Analysis & Bio Poster

For this project you will be choosing an artist and one specific artwork by that artist. You will analyze their artwork, and then create a poster with your analysis, a drawing of the artwork you chose, and a simple biography of the artist.

STEP ONE: CHOOSE AN ARTIST

Look through the artist list here and choose one you like.


STEP TWO: FIND FACTS

Your poster must include some basic facts about the artist you chose. You should include when and where they were born, when and where they died (unless they're still living!), and at least three other facts about them, such as:

  • What technique or style they used
  • What inspired them to start making art
  • Where they went to school
  • Museums where you could see their artwork
  • Hobbies or jobs they had other than art
  • A state or country they moved to, or liked to visit
  • Other artists they worked with or were influenced by
  • A quote from the artist
You should be able to find these facts on the websites linked at the bottom of the artist's page.


STEP THREE: CHOOSE AN ARTWORK

Pick one artwork by your chosen artwork to focus on.


STEP FOUR: ANALYZE THE ARTWORK

Complete the 4-Step Analysis process. Write at least two full sentences for each step.

1. Describe. What is in the picture? Keep it surface level. Just list objects or shapes.

2. Analyze. What Elements of Art do you see? Describe how the artist used at least two of the Elements - line, color, shape, form, value, texture, or space.

3. Interpret. What is the purpose or meaning of this artwork? What does it make you feel or think about?

4. Judge. Is this a successful artwork, in your opinion? Why or why not?


STEP FIVE: MAKE YOUR POSTER

Sketch and write in pencil to make sure you have room for everything. Your finished poster must include:

  • The artist's name
  • Their birthplace & date they were born and their death place & date (unless they're still alive!)
  • At least three facts about the artist
  • A drawn copy of the artwork you chose
  • Your analysis of the artwork, with at least 2 sentences for each of the 4 steps
  • Decoration - fill any remaining empty space with designs or doodles inspired by the artist/artwork


Review Book Success Criteria:
  • Choose a famous artwork
  • On your paper, write the name of the artwork, the name of the artist, and at least 1 full sentence for each step of the analysis process (describe, analyze, interpret, judge).

Variety Drawing

 Variety is a Principle of Design. Variety means using multiple Elements within the same drawing - multiple colors, multiple textures, multiple types of lines, etc. Start off by completing the practice worksheet to explore a variety of ways to draw a single object. Choose something simple you can draw many times, like an apple or a basketball. Next, start on your main drawing. This will only have 12 boxes, so that means you can leave out 3 techniques from the practice worksheet that you didn't like as much. Step 1: Divide your paper into 12 boxes using a ruler. If you are using 9” x 12” paper, that would be a line every 3 inches. Color Schemes

A color scheme is the combination of colors used within a single artwork. Learning specific color schemes helps you decide what color combination will work best for your artwork. Color schemes are based on where the colors are located on the color wheel. For example, a complementary color scheme is a color scheme that uses any two opposite colors - like red and green. You can use the color wheel to find other opposite pairs! Can you find a couple more complementary color pairs? There are a lot of different color schemes, but we'll look at six of them: MONOCHROMATIC "mono" = one, "chroma" = color, so "monochrome" = one color A monochrome picture uses different values  of one single color.
