Contrast Drawing

Contrast is a Principle of Design. Contrast is all about opposites.

For this assignment, you will use both contrasting ideas and contrasting Elements of Art.


First, choose one pair of opposite ideas to base your artwork on:

Fast & Slow     New & Old     Agree & Disagree     Alone & Together


Never & Always         Beginning & Ending         Loud & Quiet         North & South


Left & Right         Boil & Freeze         Hope & Despair         Allow & Forbid


Dangerous & Safe         Closed & Open         Sweet & Sour         Strong & Weak


Next, choose TWO types of artistic contrast to use in your artwork:

Color contrast: Use complementary (opposite) colors like red and green.

Value contrast: Use opposite values: light and dark.

Shape contrast: Use opposite shapes (geometric and organic).

Texture contrast: Use opposite textures, like spiky and smooth.

Proportion contrast: Use opposite sizes (big and small).

Form/Detail contrast: Make part of your drawing detailed and shade objects so that they look 3D. 

Make the other part of the drawing less detailed and don’t shade anything.


Now brainstorm how you will combine all three of those into one artwork. What two (or more) objects will you draw to represent contrasting ideas? How will you include the two types of artistic contrast you chose?


Example: This painting of Nelson Mandela by artist Alan Levine shows the contrasting theme "young and old" by showing Mandela at two different ages. It uses color contrast (young Mandela is cool colored, older Mandela is warm colored) and value contrast (the background is a light value, and the suits are very dark values).


Success Criteria:

  • A creative, original drawing or painting (not copied from one of the examples)
  • A theme that shows contrasting ideas, like young and old
  • Two clear types of artistic contrast, like value contrast and proportion contrast
  • Good effort and craftsmanship


Night & Day - color contrast (warm/cool) and value contrast (light/dark)

  • Choose a theme for your drawing that shows contrast (opposites)
  • Choose one type of artistic contrast to include while coloring/shading your drawing

Variety Drawing

 Variety is a Principle of Design. Variety means using multiple Elements within the same drawing - multiple colors, multiple textures, multiple types of lines, etc. Start off by completing the practice worksheet to explore a variety of ways to draw a single object. Choose something simple you can draw many times, like an apple or a basketball. Next, start on your main drawing. This will only have 12 boxes, so that means you can leave out 3 techniques from the practice worksheet that you didn't like as much. Step 1: Divide your paper into 12 boxes using a ruler. If you are using 9” x 12” paper, that would be a line every 3 inches. Color Schemes

A color scheme is the combination of colors used within a single artwork. Learning specific color schemes helps you decide what color combination will work best for your artwork. Color schemes are based on where the colors are located on the color wheel. For example, a complementary color scheme is a color scheme that uses any two opposite colors - like red and green. You can use the color wheel to find other opposite pairs! Can you find a couple more complementary color pairs? There are a lot of different color schemes, but we'll look at six of them: MONOCHROMATIC "mono" = one, "chroma" = color, so "monochrome" = one color A monochrome picture uses different values  of one single color.
